If you regularly suffer from heartburn, you know that there is not much worse in life than the pain of an acute attack. Perhaps you have paid your druggist a visit in search of help or you have seen your doctor, yet you still suffer intermittent attacks. What more can you do to get relief? Overhaul your diet! You may not need to make extreme changes in what you eat, but you must be attentive to which types of foods can trigger an attack. The following list underscores which foods may trigger an attack:

Beverages: Beer, colas, and nonalcoholic wines are some causes of heartburn.

Dairy: Yogurt, frozen yogurt, milk, certain types of cheeses, and cottage cheese.

Fats and Oils: Ketchup, especially spicy ketchup.

Fruit: Many berries can cause problems including blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Other triggers include: orange juice, peaches, grapes, and apple juice/cider. For orange juice lovers you can still drink your favorite beverage, but select low-acid orange juice when visiting your grocer.

Grains: Garlic bread, granola cereal, and many types of muffins may cause an attack.

Meat: Beef, fish, tuna, ham, hot dogs, egg, and chicken salad can cause heartburn. For some folks chicken by itself is just fine, but added ingredients such as mayonnaise can cause heartburn.

Sweets and Desserts: Low fat cookies. You may save on calories when eating low fat cookies, but the artificial ingredients contained within them can set off heartburn.

Vegetables: The big triggers in this category are onions, leeks, garlic, scallions, and sauerkraut.

Besides avoiding certain types of foods, there are medications that can stop heartburn including Nexium and Prevacid. Alternatively, some heartburn sufferers have found relief through natural remedies such as Acidgone.

By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, some heartburn sufferers have found relief. In addition, avoid excessive use of caffeinated products, alcohol, and nicotine. Finally, by selecting smaller food portions and eating less you can thwart future attacks.

You don’t need to be held hostage by heartburn;

Further reading: Acid Reflux Symptoms.

Read more about what foods to avoid if you have acid reflux: Acid Reflux Diet.

More about acid reflux symptoms: What does acid reflux feel like?.

Acid reflux in dogs is actually a condition that is known as Gastroesophageal reflux, and it is characterized by a reverse flow of intestinal or gastric fluids that is uncontrollable, and brings the fluids up into the tube that connects the stomach and the throat to one another, the esophagus. There are a couple of different things that may cause an occurrence of acid reflux in dogs, including a brief relaxation of the esophageal sphincter, the muscular opening at the base of the esophagus. Another cause for acid reflux in dogs is chronic issues with vomiting. In both dogs and cats this acid reflux can be relatively common, and although younger animals tend to be at a greater risk, acid reflux in dogs and cats may occur at any age.

This disease is not a healthy occurrence in dogs or in any other animal for that matter because the stomach acid, bile salts, pepsin and other gastrointestinal components are capable of causing damage to the protective lining of the esophagus. This can quickly result in an inflammation of the esophagus, a phenomenon known as Esophagitis.

The first step to analyzing the symptoms when you believe that your dog has Gastroesophageal reflux is to take a look at his or her behavioral history. The history of your dog\’s behavior can reveal a lot. For example, if a dog is spitting up or regurgitating food, whining or howling to indicate pain during swallowing, is losing weight or appears to have less of an appetite than usual, these are potential signs that your dog is dealing with this condition. Physical examinations may not always be able to reveal concrete findings regarding acid reflux in dogs. Severe esophagitis on the other hand may be easier to diagnose as it offers additional symptoms including fever and extreme amounts of salivation.

Acid reflux is capable of causing esophagitis with a varying amount of damage possible. Mild esophagitis caused by acid reflux in dogs may be limited to a mild amount of inflammation of the sensitive lining of the esophagus, while more severe levels of esophagitis may cause damage to deeper layers of tissue within the esophagus, causing greater harm. Acid reflux may occur in dogs any time that an anesthetic is administered, as this causes the gastroesophageal sphincter to relax enough to create the reverse flow of the stomach\’s contents into the esophagus. If the dog is positioned improperly during anesthesia or fails to fast properly before anesthesia is admitted, acid reflux may occur as a result.

Because younger dogs are still developing, their underdeveloped gastroesophageal sphincters put them at greater risk. The best means of diagnosis is the use of an esophagoscopy. This is an examination that uses an internal camera in order to view the esophagus and its lining. Changes in the mucus lining the inside of the esophagus will indicate whether or not acid reflux has caused damage to the sensitive tissue.

Most treatment for acid reflux in dogs can be done at home. Food should be withheld for a day or two, and then a low fat and low protein diet should be administered. Acid reflux in dogs can be combated by feeding small and frequent meals, and dietary fats and proteins should be significantly limited. This is because the fat in the food can decrease the strength of the muscle keeping the esophagus and stomach separated, and the protein in the food can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid into the esophagus. Another option for combating acid reflux in dogs is to administer medicine in the form of a gastrointestinal pro-kinetic agent. These medications are capable of improving the movement of the stomach contents through the intestines, and are also capable of strengthening the gastroesophageal sphincter. Even when on medication, however, a change in diet is necessary for combating acid reflux on a long term basis.

It’s not just heartburn and wheezing, it may be asthma and acid reflux. If you are living with asthma, you know how difficult it can be to be around specific triggers that can cause an attack.

A friend’s cat or dog, or even dandelions are dangers to your breathing, but imagine having a trigger within your own body.

Researchers are finding that asthma and acid reflux are intertwined conditions that negatively impact each other. If you have asthma and acid reflux, it can be extremely difficult to deal with both. Here are some facts about both conditions:

What is asthma?

Asthma is a disease that causes constriction in the lining of the bronchial tubes. When they constrict, it makes it difficult to do any physical activity, let alone breathe or even talk.

Asthma is caused by a slough of triggers, and what causes attacks are different for every sufferer.

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid is going the wrong way up, heading toward the mouth. This can cause a mild burning in the chest, sometimes known as heartburn.

Acid reflux is usually treated with an antacid, but if you have severe acid reflux your doctor will usually prescribe a stronger medication to control it.

Both combined to give you big, big problem.

Asthma and acid reflux has been found to bounce off of each other. One condition can cause the other, and vice versa.

When you have an asthma attack, changes in pressure occur in your lungs, thus causing the acidic fluids from your stomach to redirect towards your lungs. When the acid gets into the lungs, it can cause constriction of the muscles, thus leading to an asthma attack as well as heartburn.

What Can Be Done

Because asthmatics are more likely to suffer from acid reflux, and asthma and acid reflux can be a double problem for them.

Researchers have not yet found a treatment that will take care of the two problems, but they do suggest controlling your acid reflux so it doesn’t worsen your asthma.

This can be done with medications, avoiding consumption of spicy foods, as well as trying to avoid stress.

With all the problems in your life, your breathing shouldn’t be one of them. It is hard enough to deal with stress in a healthy way, and with your body reacting negatively, you have to be certain to take care of both your asthma and acid reflux to make sure they don’t act on each other.

Besides the worst combination of asthma and acid reflux got to do with your chronic, there are many deadly combination around.

There are more free articles relating to asthma at my site. Therefore, I strongly urged you to start your journey and start taking a look at my site and to get your asthma treated as soon as possible, if you are serious of getting back your asthma free life again.

You can prevent heartburn symptoms with an alkaline diet. In fact, although many conventional doctors may disagree, this is a common view shared by most naturapathic experts. With an alkaline diet, you can greatly influence the delicate acid alkaline balance of your body. Naturopathic experts say that you need to have the correct acid alkaline balance to enjoy good health and the proper functioning of the body. Heartburn symptoms come about when stomach acids back up your esophagus, creating a burning sensation in your chest area.

To know how an alkaline diet can help, you first need to understand the meanings of acidity and alkalinity. An acid is a substance that releases hydrogen into a solution and an alkali or base is one that removes hydrogen from a solution. The amount of free hydrogen is measured on a scale ranging from 1 to 14, called ph. Ph denotes the exact level of acidity or alkalinity. A ph value below 7 is said to be acidic and above 7 alkaline.

Many body functions take place at a certain acidity or alkaline level. Also, enzymes and chemical reactions in the body work best at a particular ph. A small change in ph can have a significant effect on body function. For instance, muscle contractibility reduces and hormones like adrenaline and aldosterone increased as the body becomes more acidic.

Additionally, many of your body functions take part in regulating the acid alkaline balance. These functions include respiration, excretion, digestion and cellular metabolism. Your lungs aid in regulating the acid alkaline balance by eliminating carbon dioxide from the blood. Your kidney also responds to the ph of the blood. If your blood is too acidic, the kidney excretes extra hydrogens into the urine and retains extra sodium. Phosphorus in the form of phosphate is needed for this exchange. The body obtains this phosphorus from your bones if it is not available elsewhere.

The acid alkaline balance is affected by the secretions of the stomach and the pancreas. The secretions are absorbed onto the blood stream and these have an effect on the rest of your body. To digest the foods, your stomach secretes hydrochloric acid. Your pancreas then secretes bicarbonate which neutralizes the stomach acid so that pancreatic enzymes can work properly. Anything that upsets the acid alkaline balance can have an impact on the digestive system.

The saying that you are what you eat holds true. You can prevent heartburn symptoms when you consider the nature and type of the foods that you are eating. Generally, your body becomes acidic in the process when you eat foods that acidic in nature. Examples of highly acidic foods include instant and highly processed foods such as hot dog, potato chips and cows milk, as well as red meats like beef and pork. More stomach acid needs to be produced in order to digest them. However, when this happens, acid reflux can occur because more stomach acids back up your esophagus.

If you consume more alkaline foods, then your stomach produces less acid. Highly alkaline foods tend to include more vegetables such as wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa spouts, broccoli sprouts, kale and parsley, as well as certain nuts and oils.

To reduce heartburn symptoms, you must also give your esophagus a chance to heal. If you refrain from eating foods that are acidic, you would have lessened the impact of irritants to it. You should also avoid any trigger that relaxes the LES (lower esophageal sphincter). The LES is the muscular valve separating your esophagus and the stomach. It is when this valve relaxes, that stomach acid backs up to your esophagus, causing acid reflux symptoms.

You can also derive other benefits of eating more alkaline foods. When you have an acid overload, your body tends to get weakened and drained of energy. Unfortunately, you need this energy to help fight viruses and bacteria. An acidic body allows germs, yeast, bacteria, molds and fungi to breed and flourish. In an alkaline ecosystem, these foreign invaders do not have the slightest chance to thrive or multiply. By keeping your body alkaline, holistic experts say that that you not only can reduce heartburn symptoms but also other types of diseases and ailments.

For optimal health, naturopathic experts recommend that 7.5 ph is best for alkaline body level. You should select the right foods so that you can maintain this ideal acid alkaline balance. Additionally, to prevent heartburn symptoms, you should consume your foods in smaller portions and eat in a relaxed and stress free environment.

One acid reflux cause that is most common among acid reflux sufferers is the wrong kind of diet. This includes what you eat, how much you eat, and when you eat.

It’s important to recognize that there are certain foods that will put you at greater risk of acid reflux.

Getting to know the foods that are an acid reflux trigger for you will go a long way to controlling symptoms.

If you’re having a hard time with this, keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat and the way you felt afterward. Over time, you’ll start to see a pattern in the way some foods lead to acid reflux symptoms. You’ll also want to look for the foods that don’t tend to cause symptoms so that you can eat more of those foods in the future.

In general, there are some foods that are less likely to trigger acid reflux. These foods include vegetables such as carrots, peas, and cabbage, fruits such as apples and bananas, and lean meats such as the white meat of chicken, egg whites, lean or extra lean ground beef, fat-free dairy products, and grains such as bran and oatmeal.

Typically, anything that is high in fat, is acidic, or high in salt will be a risky food. If you’re not sure, try the “low-fat” alternative.

Other foods may or may not trigger acid reflux depend on your own personal reaction to the food, and the severity of your condition. These are foods you may be able to eat in moderation. They include fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and peaches. Vegetables include cooked onions, scallions, leeks, and sauerkraut. Meats include hot dogs, fried eggs, fried fish, and ham. Dairy products can include cheeses such as cheddar and mozzarella, yogurt, and milk.

Foods that commonly trigger symptoms in a majority of sufferers include the following and should be eaten sparingly or eliminated altogether.

Fruits in this category include oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other high-acid fruits. Among the vegetables are raw onions and tomatoes. Meats with a high fat content should also be avoided. Other high fat and salty foods to be avoided include potato chips, brownies, ice cream, chocolate, donuts, and even creamy salad dressings. Coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and spirits should also be eliminated from your diet whenever possible or drunk only in moderation.

You should also make sure that you eat properly as the way you eat can encourage acid reflux as much as what you eat.

Eating smaller meals more often is a great way to reduce the likelihood of suffering from acid reflux. This approach stops the stomach from being distended allowing it to cope better with the digestion process. By overstuffing your stomach you increase the length of time the food remains in the stomach, encouraging a greater production of gastric acids. Your LES (lower esophageal sphincter) is placed under pressure to ensure stomach contents remain where they should and is more likely to fail the more you eat. This all increases the risk of acid reflux.

Slouching while eating can encourage acid reflux. The best way to eat your food is to sit up straight – yet comfortably – in your chair at the dinner table. Avoid eating on the sofa in front of TV or at the computer. By having the distractions of the TV or the PC your posture will be compromised and you are less aware of the amount of food you’re eating.

When eating your meals ensure you allow sufficient time to eat. Rushing your food and swallowing half chewed mouthfuls means more work for your stomach, as your food will be arriving in large lumps. Chewing food thoroughly allows it to combine with saliva and this starts the digestion process. By taking time over your meals you give your body a chance to recognize that it’s received sufficient food and stops you overeating, reducing the possibility of how you eat being an acid reflux cause.

Could a supplement called MSM Be The Answer?

Acid reflux or gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a condition in which fluid splashes up from the stomach into the esophagus. This fluid contains mostly acid with some pepsin and bile. All three of these fluids are potentially dangerous to the sensitive esophageal tissue, with acid being the most harmful. This refluxed fluid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus (esophagitis). If this condition is allowed to become chronic, it can in time develop into Barrett’s esophagus, which is the precursor to esophageal cancer.

Up to 15 million Americans experience acid reflux daily. People at all ages are susceptible to this condition. Older people who suffer from acid reflux tend to be more seriously affected than younger people. 13,000 people are diagnosed with esophageal cancer each year. At least 12,000 people die from it. The overall survival rate is very poor. Acid reflux is the greatest known risk factor for developing Barrett’s Esophagus, which can become esophageal cancer.

Barrett’s esophagus occurs when chronic acid reflux or esophagitis is not controlled. Through constant inflammation and damage, the normal cells that line the esophagus called squamous cells turn into specialized columnar cells. Columnar cells are not normally found in human beings and can become cancerous.

Although this can happen to anyone, it usually occurs in people over forty who have had regular bouts of heartburn for more than five years. Some of the symptoms are difficulty in swallowing and being awakened in the night by the pain of heartburn. Some people have no symptoms at all.

Scar tissue can develop from the constant attack of acid on the tender lining of the esophagus. The tissue can become thickened and hard, making the esophagus narrower. This can make it difficult to swallow food or even water.

I am a firm believer in natural cures versus conventional medicine. When I go to a doctor it is for diagnostic purposes only. Then, instead of subjecting myself to a barrage of harmful pills and painful procedures, I attempt to cure the condition myself by using alternative methods. I have found that MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) has the ability to soften scar tissue, making it flexible and permeable. I believe that by taking MSM on a regular basis, one can possibly avoid the severe problems associated with chronic acid reflux.

MSM has been touted as the greatest natural healing agent since vitamin C. It seems to have the power to reduce pain and inflammation. It is currently being used to treat a wide range of ailments including, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and gout. It’s even being used as a treatment for snoring and constipation. MSM has been used with great success on horses and dogs, to control the inflammation associated with allergies.

I use MSM to relieve the summer allergies of my twelve year old Jack Russell Terrier, Jack Pot. It works like magic. By giving him a gram of MSM in a little cheese twice a day, I have reduced his itching and running eyes, which are associated with air born allergies, to a bare minimum.

I also use MSM drops for my eyes. It evidently has the power to reduce, if not prevent, cataracts. It seems to dissolve them. My mother had cataracts in both eyes. She had one removed by her ophthalmologist. When she told me what she had one, I put her on MSM drops immediately. When she went back to the doctor for her pre-surgery exam for the second eye, they discovered that the other cataract had completely disappeared.

Aren’t cataracts a form of scar tissue? I believe that scar tissue and Barrett’s Esophagus have an important connection. Therefore, if MSM does, in fact, have this beneficial effect on scar tissue, perhaps it can prevent, or at least improve Barrett’s esophagus. Maybe MSM can help prevent this kind of cancer? I don’t know, but I will continue to take it rather than to subject myself to so called “modern medicine”.

If you should choose to go the allopathic medical route, diagnosis of Barrett’s Esophagus involves an endoscopy. The doctor sticks a long mechanical tube down your throat to observe the esophagus and perform a biopsy. It can’t be a very pleasant procedure. And what if the results are negative? The doctor will most likely prescribe drugs which have harmful side effects. Some of these drugs include H2 blockers like cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine. Or he may prescribe the drugs omeprazole and lansoprazole, which are proton pump inhibitors.

Some of he side effects of these drugs are: headache, disturbances of the gut such as diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence), dry mouth, skin reactions such as rash and itch, inflammation of the skin (dermatitis), dizziness, pain in the muscles and joints, swelling of the legs and ankles due to excess fluid retention (peripheral edema), pins and needles (paraesthesia), depression, agitation, confusion, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), sleepiness (somnolence), liver or blood disorders. The list goes on and on.

If the drugs don’t work then he’ll most likely suggest a surgical procedure called fundoplication, which entails removing the damaged part of the esophagus and attaching the remaining section to the stomach.

For myself, I will continue to search for and experiment with natural cures for acid reflux. I think that perhaps the medical approach could be worse than the disease itself.

I was a victim of acid reflux for many years. I had disappointing experiences with doctors, who knew nothing about nutrition or alternative medicine. Basically, doctors only know how to write prescriptions. They know nothing about healing. They are only taught how to treat symptoms by dealing drugs that support the pharmaceutical industry.

The Proton pump inhibitors, which my doctor prescribed, ultimately didn’t work for me. Besides the harmful side effects caused by these drugs, no one really know what the long tern affect of them is on the human body.

Since conventional medicine didn’t help me, I was highly motivated to explore alternative means of healing myself. After much research and experimentation, I did find natural ways which allowed me to ultimately cure my acid reflux condition. MSM was one of them.

For information on how to heal acid reflux the natural way, go to: http://www.refluxgoneforever.com

Acid reflux disorder, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, is a condition worthy of ample attention. This chronic and complicated health problem affects the digestive tract by causing inflammation and even permanent damage to the esophagus. Because it affects a great number of people world-wide, it is important to note the acid reflux prevention that you could implement in order to avoid the symptoms from surfacing and be able to control the disorder.

Acid reflux is not only painful and annoying. Frequent regurgitation irritates the lining of the esophagus, which may lead to ulceration and scarring. At worst, it may even lead to the development of esophageal cancer.

Foods that should be eaten rarely to avoid acid reflux are fruit juices, berries, garlic, onions, leeks, sauerkraut, scallions, ground beef, chicken salad, eggs, hot dogs, ham, milk, cheese, granola, alcohol, cola and fattening or fried foods.

Other factors that create a predisposition for acid reflux include smoking, use of alcohol, food allergies, certain medications, and lying down after meals. As you can tell, most of these factors can be overcome by practicing some behavioral modifications. In fact, in many cases of recurrent acid reflux, lifestyle changes are all that is necessary in preventing heartburn from becoming a chronic disease. Remember to consult a physician before embarking on any treatment strategy.

Adopting a natural remedy for GERD is considered much better than the proton pump inhibitors (such as “Prilosec” and “Prevacid”), and the histamine antagonists (such as “Zantac”, “Pepcid” and “Tagament”) in terms of reliability and effectiveness because these drugs drastically cut down on the production of digestive acids in your stomach, which is very dangerous in the long run because the digestive capability of your stomach gets hampered. The diminished levels of digestive juices in your stomach also increase the risk of developing infections from the food we eat. These complications can be avoided altogether with the use of an effective natural remedy for GERD.

Caffeine and other drinks should be avoided. Soda and aerated drinks should be completely avoided. Also, alcohol should be taken sparingly because it loosens the muscle strength of the LES and makes it sluggish. This can then cause stomach acids to move back into the esophagus from the stomach. Alcohol also increases the amount of stomach acid which is also disadvantageous.

Treatment for acid reflux can only help short term and commonly antacids are used to ease the pain and symptoms from acid reflux or GERD. Antacids are usually helpful in short-term cases and infrequent attacks, but they can’t provide a long-term relief. A diagnosis of acid reflux is performed by gastroscopy, a medical examination using a flexible, thin fiber-optic instrument coupled to an eyepiece and light source called gastroscope.

It is possible to prevent acid reflux symptoms with proper food selection. Heartburn is an extremely painful symptom that you may experience and you may think that your condition is a cardiovascular one. However, acid reflux is really a digestive disorder that can be treated with making some diet changes. Careful selection of the foods that are suitable for your consumption can help reduce the severity and frequency of your symptoms.

Once diagnosed with acid reflux disease otherwise known as gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), you can expect that this to be a life long condition. Many people who are afflicted with serious heartburn symptoms will need to seek treatment for their esophagus. However, future attacks may continue to damage the organ, thereby precipitating the need for further treatment. For this reason, treatment for acid reflux is usually conducted on an ongoing basis.

Acid reflux describes a condition whereby the liquid contents of the stomach are regurgitated into the esophagus. This liquid, since it has come from the stomach, contains acids that are used in digestion, even bile. When this liquid is sent back up to the esophagus, these acids, inflame, injure and damage it and thus causing several acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn.

Certain foods are more likely to trigger an acid reflux attack, while others will carry less risk. For an easier understanding, you can place all foods into three categories in accordance to their effects on your condition. They should be recorded as safe foods, moderate foods and unsafe foods.

Safe foods seldom or rarely trigger an acid reflux symptom. Such foods include fruits like apples and bananas, vegetables like cabbage, peas carrots, meat like lean ground beef, egg whites, chicken breast, dairy products such as cheese (provided that they are fat-free), and grains such as oatmeal and bran. These foods are generally low in fat and are alkaline.

Moderate foods may or may not cause symptoms. Still, it is best to consume them in moderation to prevent acid reflux. Hence, eat these foods only occasionally. Moderate foods include fruits like peaches, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Vegetables in this category include onions (cooked), garlic, scallions, sauerkraut, and leeks. Fried eggs, fried fish, hot dogs, and ham have the potential to trigger heartburn. Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese varieties such as cheddar and mozzarella should also be consumed in moderation.

Lastly, unsafe foods are those that can trigger a heartburn attack quite easily. As such, you should avoid these food items to prevent acid reflux symptoms from developing. These foods include fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. These type of fruits are high in acidic content. Vegetables like onions (raw) are traditional culprits. Portions of meat that have high-fat content should also be avoided. Also, refrain from eating ice cream, brownies, chocolates, potato chips, doughnuts, and high-fat salad dressings. You should also consume beverages like wine, tea and coffee sparingly, if at all.

Although it has not been proven scientifically, many people believe that stress is a major contributor to acid reflux disease.

Physiologically, stress can cause the digestive system to come to a screeching halt. Food that should be moving along will linger and magnify the effects of acid reflux. Under stress the body sends energy to the muscles, via the blood stream, to help the body cope with a stressful situation. This means that less blood, or energy, is flowing to the digestive system. When digestion is slowed down in this manner, undigested food and gastric juices remain in the stomach much longer enhancing the occurrence of acid reflux.

Stress can also cause people to experience changes in behavior like the immoderate consumption of alcohol and so called “comfort foods”. It can also lead to late night binging and excessive smoking. All of which can trigger the symptoms of acid reflux, by producing excessive acid in the stomach and relaxing the Lower Esophageal sphincter or (LES). When the LES is relaxed, stomach acid can splash up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing the pain of heartburn.

The “fight or flight syndrome” caused by stress can cause the body to tense up, delivering most of its energy to the heart, lungs and muscles. This intensifies hyperacidity, as the stomach is robbed of oxygen and enzymes necessary for proper digestion.

About half of the people who suffer from heartburn attribute it to stress. Whether stress is related to unpleasant work situations, emotional disorders, money problems, family strife or social conflicts, there are many things which can be done to restore the needed harmony in one’s life.

Whether you suffer from chronic acid reflux and find that stress exacerbates the condition, or you experience occasional acid reflux brought on by bouts of stress, consider the following:

Take the pressure off yourself Lining up too many goals to be accomplished in too short a period of time can be very stressful. Do one thing at a time. Learn to relax and learn to say no when others become too demanding. Set your priorities straight and make lists that you can stick to. Go easy on yourself.

Take your mind off of you “Loosing your mind” is not the worst thing you can do. Meditation, Tai Chi, Hatha Yoga, Chi Gong and self-hypnotism are all great ways to relieve stress. Focusing on a demanding activity will take your mind off what is causing the stress. Not thinking about yourself can be very beneficial. These arts can also be applied to enhance life with positive improvement.

Exercise your way to peace of mind – Everyone knows that exercise is essential for good health. Besides the physical benefits it is also an important way to relieve stress. Who has time to think about problems when you’re about to win a tennis match! The endorphins produced in your brain while exercising create an opiate-like “good feeling” sensation that can take you far away from the cares of the day. It is important to find a way to make exercise fun, whether it be jogging with your dog or playing ball with your friends.

“Let it be” You cannot control everything in life. There will always be planes that are late arrivals or departures. The weather may not cooperate with that family picnic that you planned. Your mother-in-law may show up when least expected and there will always be taxes to pay. It is important to learn to roll with the punches. You can always find something good in an otherwise bad situation, but most importantly don’t let it stress you out.

Maintain an optimistic attitude Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. Focus on the good things – not the bad things. Be excited about the future and believe that only good is in store for you. Better than projecting the future, concentrate on the present and demonstrate gratitude in the moment. Being optimistic not only affects others in a positive way, it gives you the balance that you need to be stress free.

Have a good laugh! Laughter is the great healer. A good laugh can relieve more stress than anything else. Watch a funny movie, go to a comedy club or go see Hunter Blue perform at Mimi’s in New York City. Try to associate with people who make you laugh, or at least don’t make you frown. Maintain a good sense of humor at all times. Stress cannot exist where there is laughter.

Love a dog or a cat – Pet animals are a sure cure for stress. Their pure unaffected love and funny antics can blow that stress away. If you can’t muster the obligation of responsibility for a pet, borrow someone else’s pet or volunteer to be a care taker when they are out of town. Pets have a tranquilizing affect on us and their power to diminish stress should not be overlooked.

Talk to a friend It’s very therapeutic when a trusted friend gives advice and thoughtful support. We all need objective guidance at times. Sympathy from friends and relatives has a calming affect and can reduce stress. It’s almost as if you are not bearing your problems alone anymore and that kind of encouragement is invaluable.

Get a massage – There is nothing quite as stress relieving as a good massage. I find that going for acupuncture is very relaxing as well. If you can’t manage a massage, indulge in a long hot bath, whirlpool or steam shower.

It has been said that stress is a killer. Thankfully, its reduction is not rocket science and is quite easily accomplished. By reducing the stress in our lives, we can minimize the effect of the acid reflux condition. Of course there are other factors involved with acid reflux, but stress is certainly one of the big ones and should be dealt with in a serious manner.
