Acid reflux, like any other dietary disease, has no simple and easy cure. Moderation is usually the best remedy for dietary diseases or disorders. Perhaps it would be good to shed some light on occurrence of acid reflux within the body. Acid reflux or heartburn in layman’s terms happens when the stomach content in the body is too acidic and is subsequently sent back the reversed way to the esophagus.

The walls of the esophagus are designed to withstand neutral content and will cause pain and inflammation when acidic content is in contact with it. It can be liken to swallowing corrosive acid.

There is no hard and fast rule on what one should eat or not to avoid or cure acid reflux in the body. The occurrence of acid reflux tends to vary from person to person. For example, person A may feel experience acid reflux in the body after consuming read meat while person B may be fine with it. Before we start prescribing a rough remedy for ourselves, it would be best to understand the malady. Therefore, we should try our best to understand our body and what foods which cause it to happen in our bodies.

However, there are a few foods which are generally fine to be eaten to avoid acid reflux based on their content and low acidity levels. Fruits and vegetables are always a good bet for the body but no citrus fruits here as they are acidic.

Some good fruits are such as pineapple, banana and apples because they absorb acids whereas some good vegetables are such as cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage as they are alkaline in nature. These are acid reflux food to eat in order not to worsen your acid level.

Red meat is a big no but a healthy balance of meats, fish and grains is welcomed to improve digestion and avoid reverse flow of food content in the body. As a last example, please stay away from dairy products which triggers the stomach to release acids but low fat yogurt is fine.

Acid reflux or heartburn is a very painful condition that is caused by stomach acids leaking into the lower esophagus. This is treated in using several methods. In the early stages of the disease, in which the heartburn is only occasional antacids can be of some help, but in the long run like in the case of calcium carbonate, actually make the problem worse. Some other medications give only temporary (approx. eight weeks) relief. The long-term goal is to find the source and eliminate it by using allergy medications or avoiding foods that cause the problem. In this case creating an acid reflux food plan is a necessity.

What foods to avoid

While every person’s case is different in general the foods to avoid are:

1. Caffeinated drinks-soda, coffee, and hot/cold chocolate drinks.

2. Peppermint & Spearmint-both as drinks such as tea, and in gum, and other foods as flavoring.

3. Citrus-this would mean both drinks, like orange juice, and foods as in lemons and limes.

4. Spicy foods -raw onions, cinnamon, red and other hot peppers.

5. Chocolate-flavors and candy bars

6. Alcohol-in medicine as well as in food

7. Tomatoes- in drinks as well as in foods

8. Fried and fatty foods-this would include most fast food and junk foods.

While most of these foods are causes of heartburn, it must be stressed that it might be possible that there are other foods that cause heartburn in addition to or instead of these foods. So the best acid reflux food plan is an individually created one that meets that individual’s needs.

What foods to include

In general, the foods to include are the ones that do not cause the symptoms. In addition, you need to be sure to get a well-balanced and enjoyable meal while still living without the others. Remember that vitamin C is required in other forms than orange juice and the citrus foods that are restricted. In this case, a supplement might be necessary in this case if other foods are not found.

Grains such as whole-wheat flour, oats and others will be needed to aid in the digestive process. In addition there are several digestive enzymes available and it is advisable to take one before bed at night. One good plan is to go through your cupboard, pantry, and refrigerator and remove all offending acid reflux food. Then go back again and see what menus can be made with the items you have left. Shopping is made easier with a list of foods that do not cause heartburn. You might also look for foods from restaurant menus and try to find new foods to order while eating out. It would also be a good plan to search the Internet or the library for good cookbooks to look for healthy recipes that you are able to digest easily.

While creating an acid reflux food plan may at first sound difficult, actually it is quite simple. You must find what foods are causing the problem and eliminate them. In addition, you need to determine what foods remain and learn to both create new recipes and recreate old ones from the dishes that you enjoyed in the past. This might mean ordering pizza with no sausage and onions on it or it might mean recreating an old favorite recipe.

What acid reflux foodstuffs should I not eat? The majority of sufferers of acid reflux are baffled by this question. Preferring healthy foods based on selective eating between what to increase or decrease can bring long-term health advantages to acid reflux sufferers. Changes in lifestyle and diet are considered to be parts of a long-term holistic acid treatment and are integral and inseparable.

Reducing consumption of unsuitable foods and adopting new dietary habits particularly to help digestion for acid reflux sufferers could bring about a hugely positive effect on your current condition of gastro esophageal reflux disease. The food we eat is determinant in the maintenance of the delicate and natural internal equilibrium of our bodies. Certain dietary habits and nutrition have been found to contribute indirectly or directly to the worsening of GERD. These kinds of foods are:

1. Coffee and other drinks containing caffeine result in increases in acidity, so avoid large quantities of coffee. Limit your consumption each day to two cups of coffee or less if possible. When you can, divide your cup of coffee into two half cups and drink less coffee before bedtime.

2. Alcohol can also be at the same time a relaxant for the LES muscle and an irritant for the stomach, causing an increase in acidity and reflux.

3. Among the worst offenders for acid reflux symptoms are foods that are high in fat. Longer to be digested and more difficult to eliminate from your body, they push up the probability that acid refluxes into your esophagus. Exceptionally however, fish and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids are in fact strong anti-inflammatory agents.

4. If you are a chocolate addict, make dark, organic types your preference and do not exceed two or three minuscule squares two or three times in any week. Because it contains large amounts of caffeine and fat, chocolate can also boost acidity, worsening digestion, and for that reason should not be eaten.

5. Before going to sleep, make sure that you do not drink milk or consume any products based on milk containing a lot of calcium.

6. Avoid strong mint in food and also herbal tea that is mint-based. Acid reflux symptoms can be worsened by peppermint and spearmint amongst others.

7. Foods high in acid (oranges and tomatoes for example) and cruciferous vegetables (such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, brussels sprouts) trigger opening of the esophageal sphincter leading to more acid reflux.

In this case which acid reflux food is to be avoided? By making these changes in your diet and with the right motivation to change your lifestyle, you can move to vanquishing acid reflux and enhance your well-being and quality of life. No matter what your acid reflux level is, when you take the decision for better quality of life, you literally have the choice to tackle acid reflux and stop it recurring, by taking the holistic approach. The power to do that will be yours.

Heartburn is a common problem in today’s world. Acid reflux, gastric reflux, GERD, (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) are the many names heartburn has been given. Even though they all share many of the same traits, there are specific medical conditions that can be found in each. Acid reflux or acid disorder reflux is a disorder of the digestive tract.

Acid disorder reflux gives the unfortunate sufferer a burning sensation in their chest and stomach. This painful inflammation is the result of hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is used by the stomach to digest food. When the stomach and the esophagus canal is not separated by a mechanism known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, then the stomach acids backup into the esophagus. This refluxing motion causes an irritation to the sensitive tissues in the lower esophagus area.

Generally the esophageal sphincter muscle functions normally. It contracts and closes the esophagus area after you have had a meal. This closure prevents the stomach acid from rising up into the esophagus during the digestion process. However there are times when the Lower Esophageal Sphincter does not operate properly, then acid from the stomach reflux into the esophagus. This results in the condition that is medically known as gastroesophageal reflux disorder or acid disorder reflux.

The reasons for acid disorder reflux are varied. However they often occur with other health issues like allergies, enzyme deficiencies, gallbladder problems, hiatal hernia, stress and heartburn ulcers.

Food and beverage consumption is another possible cause. It is recommended that you avoid consumption of alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits and drinks as these are known to relax the Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES as it is called. Coffee, Tea and colas which contain caffeine must be eliminated from your diet as well. These beverages contain a substance called theobromine.

Fried and fatty foods have a tendency to slow down the digestion process. Eating large amounts of food at any time of the day can put a lot of pressure on your stomach muscles. When the food is kept in your stomach for a long period, there is increased pressure to the stomach muscles. This pressure build-up can weaken the LES.

As this is the valve that protects your esophagus from the stomach you need to take care that this weakened conditioned does not allow the digested food acids to pass into your esophagus. Therefore you should eat small meals throughout the day. By consuming large amounts of food, you cause the LES to relax and reflux food into the esophagus leading to acid disorder reflux.

Tomatoes and tomato-based products like sauces and tomato juice will also cause the LES to relax. These tomato-based products lead to an increase in the production of stomach acid. When they reflux into the esophagus, the acidity levels cause acid disorder reflux.

By watching what you eat and taking care of your health, you stand a better chance of avoiding acid disorder reflux from entering your life and causing you pain, and its’ always better in the long to eat healthy anyway.

If you are one of the many people that suffer from acid reflux disease, you probably know already that the symptoms of this disease are caused by the type of food you eat. Some foods will cause more acid to be made inside the stomach, which means that heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms will be more painful, intense and unpleasant.

Before starting to talk about what acid reflux food to avoid, you should know that not everyone behaves the same when he/she has this disease. The same condition can behave one way for a person, and in another way for other people. That’s why the foods that need to be avoided aren’t the same in all cases.

You can experiment a bit with different foods, to see which is the best diet in your case. If you choose to experiment, you should test a lot of different foods, and find out through trial and error which are the ones that don’t trigger the acid reflux, and which do.

Even though I said before that foods have different effects, depending on the people eating them, some foods will always be safe, and other will always be unsafe. In most cases, you can safely eat vegetables, fresh fruits, bread, beans or cereals. Those that aren’t safe include lemon, orange juice, citric fruits, grapefruit, lime or cranberries, as they will provoke the acid reflux.

A lot of people think that they can’t get acid reflux from drinking milk, but they are wrong. Milk and most dairy foods are in the category of foods that should be avoided by people with acid reflux.

Other products that should be avoided or reduced in quantity are greasy or fatty foods, especially those that originate from animals. Alcohol, soft drinks, mints, chocolate or mint flavored foods are also on the list of drinks and foods that should be consumed in moderation if you suffer from acid reflux.

If you tried a lot of different drinks and foods and you can’t get rid of the acid reflux symptoms, you should try talking with a doctor. In some cases he will be able to prescribe you some drugs that will help with your condition.

If your case is severe, you can resort to surgery as a last resort. The surgery strengthens the muscle which blocks the acid from the stomach.

Acid reflux is a disease that occurs when stomach acids containing pepsin abnormally reflux back to the esophagus, which cause irritation. If left untreated, it will take a very long time before the esophagus completely heals. Worse, it will develop into ulcer and some form of cancer.

There are many ways to avoid acid reflux. Food, for example, should be given so much attention because the food and drinks you consume affect how often you get acid reflux attacks. There are certain food groupd that are highly acidic and are high in fat, and you must avoid them, because they make the digestive system work harder and increase the acid supply in the body.

So, what kind of safe foods you can eat?

These are the ones that are opposite of the dangerous foods you should avoid. They are generally low in fat and contain low acids. These include:

- Food rich in complex carbohydrates like bread, cereal, graham crackers, pretzels

- Apples, either the pulp or the juice

- Banana

- Baked potato

- Green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots

- Legumes and lentiles like green beans and peas

- Meat low in fat like extra-lean ground beef and skinless chicken breast

- Egg whites

- Fish without added fat

- Low-fat dairy products

- Low-fat salad dressings and desserts

Here are some of the food groups you should avoid:

- Chocolate

- Coffee

- Spearmint and peppermint

- Alcoholic drinks

- Fruit juices like orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice

- Ground beef, chuck

- Marbled sirloin

- Chicken nuggets

- Buffalo wings

- Dairy products such as sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cottage cheese

- Macaroni and cheese

- Spaghetti with sauce

- Tea

- Fatty foods and fried foods

- Onions

- Citrus fruits

- Spicy foods

- Products which are tomato-based

- Caffeinated drinks

- Spices such as garlic, onions, red or black pepper and chili powder

- Baked food high in fat like butter cookies, brownies, doughnuts,

- Junk foods like corn chips and regular potato chips

Aside from eating certain food, you should keep a food journal that tracks down which of the food had probably caused your acid reflux in case you had one for the day, and of course, all the things you had consumed for the day.

If you want to know more about the right diet for acid reflux, check the web for heartburn-free recipes. And if you want a natural treatment for acid reflux, my review on a book that had taught thousands of acid reflux patients get rid of their condition permanently will help you.

Acid reflux causes are complicated and multiple. The disease of acid reflux, known also as GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease), comes about because of the coincidence of several medical and lifestyle factors. Physiological conditions that provoke reflux include LES (lower esophageal sphincter) hypotonia (the progressive weakening of the LES), together with the backwards flow of the contents of the stomach into the esophagus and the sensitivity to the reflux content of the mucus of the esophagus.

The food that you swallow moves down your throat and contractions of the esophagus muscles then push it further. In the area of the junction of the esophagus and the stomach, there is a valve-like mechanism which is the LES (lower esophageal sphincter). Closing this muscle stops stomach acid from returning or refluxing into the esophagus.

The problem with the LES is the first causal step to the disease of acid reflux. In a healthy person, the LES is only relaxed upon food moving from the esophagus into the stomach. When the food is inside the stomach, the valve shuts again to maintain stomach acid and content inside. When the LES is weakened however and fails to shut correctly, acid can be pushed back up your throat causing a painful burning feeling which is heartburn.

There are several conditions or factors preventing the LES from properly shutting. They include genetic weakness, being overweight and eating too much fatty foods. As well as those factors, the aging process undergone by humans tends to make all muscles sag, not just the LES.

The next factor or group of factors responsible for acid reflux disease are related to behavior and lifestyle. As already indicated, an LES that is already weak contributes directly to acid reflux disease at the physiological level. Various foodstuffs, drugs and processes of the nervous system can cause weakening in this muscle and exacerbate acid reflux. Foods possibly triggering acid reflux include orange juice, lemons and lemonade, grapefruit juice, tomatoes et their juice, fried potatoes, sour cream, tea and coffee.

There are several possibilities for dealing with symptomatic acid reflux. Nevertheless, the classic often used approaches, based on prescription and over the counter medication, only deal with the symptoms of chronic acid reflux. They may not be sufficiently effective to give long-term prevention of acid reflux. These classic approaches do not heal or protect the esophagus correctly and using these over the counter and prescription drugs, including antacid, over a long duration can cause multiple side effects ranging running the gamut from uncomfortable to dangerous.

Other than prescription medication, there is a large choice of alternative treatments including homeopathy, herbal remedies and all encompassing all natural holistic therapies that address your acid reflux problem while also resolving the internal causes of acid reflux and healing them rather than targeting only related symptoms that are external.

You see, we should be very thankful that we are born in this modern generation because of the existence of the Internet. With the Internet, every information (whether about heartburn acid reflux or any other such as relief from heartburn, weight loss programs, food that cause acid reflux or even gerd acid reflux) can be found with ease on the Internet, with great articles like this.

Acid reflux without nexium has grown as an alternative mode of treatment to cure any problems that may be arising from acid reflux. Nexium is an allopathic remedy, which is popularly used to curing acid reflux. Due to the wide scale side effects that nexium has on the body, individuals suffering from acid reflux are changing their mode of treatment. The symptoms of acid reflux include the following:

According to Ayurveda, acid reflux is caused due to improper functioning of the sub – category of Pitta dosha called Pachaka. Due to acid reflux disease, the muscular valve becomes weak and allows stomach acid to flow up the esophagus. It was quite a scare but at least now with better understanding as to acid reflux causes and triggers, he is much more able to keep his condition under control.

Sleep: Do not lie down horizontally for the next 3 hours after a meal. This decreases the amount of food and stomach acid in your stomach and prevents acid reflux from happening when you lie down at a later time. If you want to go to bed early, then you should try to take your dinner at an early time to allow enough time for digestion. Those who eat snacks at bedtime is at higher risk of developing acid reflux.

Unlike many people out there, don’t forget that even if this article related to heartburn acid reflux doesn’t cover all the basics you wanted, you can always take a look at any of the search engines like Google dot com or Search.Yahoo dot com for more heartburn acid reflux related information.

A doctor can give the proper diagnosis for acid reflux in infants and provide the proper tests for infants and children. If your baby does have acid reflux, a doctor will be able to help you deal with the problem. The right diagnosis and treatment can give your baby a better chance of having no damage and pain. You and your doctor can talk about what treatments will be best for your baby and other things that can be done to help relieve the acid reflux. Knowing the right information will help you to do the best you can for your child and be able to recognize the signs for faster treatment.

When you are developing your own acid reflux food plan, having a list of foods that you can have to will help make your grocery shopping go much more smoothly. You know that you are winning the battle against acid reflux if you are making a conscious effort to avoid the foods that trigger your acid reflux symptoms and stick to your acid reflux food plan. Go over your pantry and shelves; get rid of the foods that cause your acid reflux symptoms and replace them with the ones in your acid reflux food plan.

Exercise is also highly effective in relieving acid reflux because it aids in speeding digestion and stifles one of the peskiest acid reflux culprits being overweight. There are many natural remedies for acid reflux and its complications. Another great natural treatment for acid reflux is chamomile, which can be brought in many stores today as a ready prepared tea drink.

Many people that searched for heartburn acid reflux also searched online for reflux esophagitis, irritable bowel syndrone, and even acid reflux esophagitis.

Prescription drugs are expensive, have dangerous side effects and do not cure acid reflux. They only treat the symptoms. There are many natural remedies for acid reflux and its complications. Natural remedies have no side effects and can actually cure the condition. They are also cheaper for the consumer.

Most doctors, unfortunately, have little knowledge of natural medicine. They receive no training of the natural healing skills in med school. It seems that most physicians only know how to support the pharmaceutical companies by writing out prescriptions. In fact, the medical community at large opposes natural medicine because there is no money in it for them.

If you choose to treat yourself by using natural techniques, then you are on your own unless you are lucky enough to have a holistic practitioner. Thankfully, we have the internet at our disposal where there is a bounty of information available. Our job then, is to glean out the good from the bad – to become an investigator and to find out what is best for us individually. At least, for the moment, we have the freedom to do so.

Acid reflux is essentially caused by improper eating habits. That includes what we eat, how we eat and where we eat. Most likely a person suffering from acid reflux has a damaged esophagus. It is essential to allow the esophagus to heal in order to break the acid reflux cycle. There are many safe and natural products available in health food stores and on the internet that can assist in this process. Following, are some easy steps that can be employed to become acid reflux free:

1. Eliminate the trigger causes. Everyone should know what foods usually cause acid reflux. We are all different and react to food and beverages in different ways. Many people find that by avoiding acidic foods like tomato sauce, coffee, red wine, chocolate, fried and spicy foods, they can reduce the chances of having acid reflux.

Foods that consist of highly refined carbohydrates and sugars also can contribute to this condition. Staying away from fast food restaurants is a wise thing to do. It is far healthier to eat a meal of fruit like bananas and apples, or soup and a salad than a greasy, fat filled burger with fries. Fast food places are designed to give you indigestion. By pushing that large carbonated soda with your fast food meal, they are guaranteeing that you will have heartburn. It is always best to drink nothing with a meal, as liquid dilutes the acids necessary for proper digestion. Carbonation only makes it worse.

2. Another great cause of acid reflux is eating under stressful conditions. It is wise not to eat while reading the newspaper or watching television. Even on the subliminal level, the slightest bit of unpleasant business can contribute to stress and indigestion. I have found that yoga and meditation tend to reduce the stress that we accumulate in day to day living. Give it a try.

Have you ever noticed that you are apt to have heartburn if you mix eating with argument? Suffice it to say that one should never eat while in a negative emotional state. This is a sure fire formula for acid reflux to flare up.

Eating slowly in a relaxed and pleasant environment is essential for good digestion. Chewing food thoroughly is also important, as food is easier to digest if broken down into tiny pieces. Also keep in mind that saliva mixed with food, is the first step in the digestive process. Therefore, avoiding that quick lunch on the run, will aid you in developing more healthy eating habits and reduce your chances of acid reflux.

Another important point to make is to always allow two to three hours after eating before you go to bed. This allows the food in the stomach to go down to the next level of digestion where it will not be able to reflux up into the esophagus.

3. Water consumption is very important. Drinking water is paramount to good health in general. By drinking water at the first sign of acid reflux, one can reduce the pain by diluting the acid in the stomach. As mentioned before, one should not drink while eating, but later if there is acid reflux.

Drinking copious amounts of fresh pure water helps the body become alkaline in nature. Water flushes out the acidic toxins which our bodies collect on a cellular lever. If we are alkaline in nature, we reduce the chances of developing acid reflux.

It has been proven that people who do regular aerobic exercise tend to have less acid reflux than those who don’t. Walking at a rapid pace for thirty minutes a day will do the job.

There are many other aspects to consider when attempting to become acid reflux free. The information above will certainly get you on your way.

© 2006 Wind Publishing

For free recipes, articles and information about acid reflux, please visit: http://www.refluxgoneforever.com

An alarming number of American citizens suffer from heartburn, gastro esophageal reflux disease, ulcers and acid reflux. Foods that contain citrus, spices and dietary fats are great contributors to these ailments.

What many don’t know is the negative effects regarding existing acid reflux and coffee. Caffeine is, also, a contributor toward the increased sufferings of acid reflux as it’s known to aggravate these existing conditions by promoting hyperacidity within the stomach and digestive tracts.

Some people experience occurrences of acid reflux so infrequently that they might forget the last time and incident happened. Other people, though, suffer from acid reflux much more frequently, even having acid indigestion more than once a day!

It’s common for those suffering for acid reflux to depend solely on antacids and medications to relieve such an ailment. Many of these people, though, don’t realize that a slight change in diet can produce the same results, such as reducing the amounts of coffee they drink.

Acid reflux is the occurrence of acid from the stomach is forced up into the esophagus, generally known as heartburn. This only occurs, though, when the esophageal sphincter weakens. The esophageal sphincter is a encircling muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. Studies have proven that there exists a very close association with the ingestion of caffeine, especially in high quantities, and the negative effects of heartburn.

Most people that hear the word caffeine automatically associate the term with coffee. What remains unknown to a lot of people, though, is that caffeine is also present in such tasty delights as cocoa, tea, aerated beverages and chocolate.

People might reduce their coffee intake, but continue normal ingestion of the others. This, of course, only helps slightly. As acid reflux worsens, it becomes what is known as gastro esophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

The common ailments associated with GERD are as follows. Chest pain, bleeding, stricture of the esophagus, Barrett’s esophagus, swallowing complications and choking. Now, the inability to decrease caffeine intake is not the only way to increase the harmful effects of acid reflux, becoming GERD, but consuming alcoholic beverages and pregnancy have been known to be as equal a culprit.

Caffeinated products tend to increase the process that empties gastric acid from the body which, after time, damages the tissue of the intestines. Obviously, then, to reduce this process, the sufferer must decrease their consumption of caffeine in order to, hopefully, reverse this unwelcome ailment.

As in anything, though, unless a person is addicted to such things and must seek professional assistance in order to decrease this unnecessary intake, it’s best to just cut caffeine from the diet altogether.

Begin by altering your diet. Substitute caffeinated products with non-caffeinated products. Acid reflux and coffee can prove to be a painful combination. Soy is an excellent substitute. Herbal coffees also make for great alternatives.

Not only can you decrease, or reverse, the negative effects of acid reflux by removing caffeine from your diet, but you’ll also notice a substantial decrease from chronic stress, adrenaline exhaustion and any other ailments that are associated with caffeine. There’s nothing to lose but ailments, themselves.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.
