How many first time parents, before their baby is even born, have these wonderful fantasies where mommy, daddy and baby live in complete and utter harmony? Most of us who have children now, realize that it was just a load of crap caused by overactive hormones.

Most times when parents bring home a new baby, they bring with them what their pediatricians call acid reflux in baby. What this means is that they cannot digest the regular type formulas that are available on the market. What this also means is that when they are fed these commercial formulas, it causing a horrible reaction that stuns baby and parents alike. This condition is simply called acid reflux in baby.

Nothing can be worse than bringing home a baby that seemed so happy and peaceful in the hospital, that now is home and screaming in pain.

What Should You Do?

If you listen to your Aunt Bertha, she may tell you that cod liver oil or ipecac in babys bottle will do the trick. There are other aunts, nanas, and cousins who will all weigh in on their opinion of what you should do when there is acid reflux in baby.

Your best bet, if this is a real problem for you, your husband and baby, is to speak in depth to your pediatrician to find out what the underlying cause of acid relax in baby can be from. It can be something as simple as a digestive system that is not ready for any foods yet, to allergies that may be waiting to be sprung on your child the minute they eat something that triggers it.

The important thing to remember is this is not a situation that is not going to last forever. Your little one will more than likely grow out of acid reflux in baby. This does not mean that when our baby is a big man or woman they wont experience this condition, but once your baby passes the line of acid reflux which is usually about three months, it shouldnt bother you again, unless you have another child.

If you’re suspecting acid reflux in baby, be aware that the condition doesn’t just occur in older children and adults. Any suspicion of stomach related problems in your baby should be screened and diagnosed by a healthcare specialist. Babies suffering from acid reflux will show just about the same symptoms as adult sufferers. However, it can be more challenging to treat babies since they don’t tend to follow certain methods all the time and may need more assistance. Take the steps in this article to effectively treat your baby.

Step 1: Watch Out For Symptoms

Some of the most common signs of acid reflux in your baby could be coughing, spitting, vomiting, and bloody stool. You may also notice that your baby is irritable and feeding poorly. A lot of babies actually experience these symptoms in the first 3 months.

However, some babies will experience more severe symptoms that may last from 12 to 18 months. Few babies have acid reflux due to other complications. These include breathing problems, poor growth, blood loss and irritability due to pain. While these complications can also be symptoms of acid reflux, they can be caused by other disorders.

Step 2: Have Your Baby Screened And Diagnosed

After an analysis of your baby’s symptoms and a thorough physical exam, your doctor can right away inform you if your baby has acid reflux. If your doctor thinks your child may have a more severe condition, then he or she may recommend other diagnostic tests. These include lab tests, esophageal pH monitoring, upper GI series, and upper endoscopy.

Step 3: Follow Recommended Treatment

Your doctor can recommend many types of treatments. You may be advised to continue breastfeeding to reduce symptoms of acid reflux in baby. You may also be asked to feed your baby smaller amounts and more frequently, as overfeeding tends to worsen the condition. You may also try thickening the baby formula and see if there is any improvement in the next 3 to 5 days, otherwise stop.

Step 4: Maintain Your Baby’s Health

Acid reflux in infants deals with preventive measures. Because acid reflux mainly involves stomach acid and enzymes, the condition can always come back if you don’t maintain your baby’s overall health. Always try to relax your baby by feeding it in a quiet place, keeping pressure away from its abdomen, and not allowing it to do vigorous activities or sit in upright positions after feeding.

Continue feeding your baby with small portions only but frequently. Also burp your baby during and after feeding. This way, you can free the air accumulating in your baby’s stomach and therefore reduce discomfort. Ditch the old baby bottle for a new one if the hole in its nipple is too large. Make sure that the hole is just the right size so that milk will not flow too fast. It shouldn’t also be so small that your baby will become frustrated and swallow more air. Finally, let your baby sleep with some elevation under its back (about 30 degrees).

Taking preventive measures after treatment can get rid of acid reflux in baby for good. Just make sure that your doctor is informed about the methods you’re doing at home so he or she can monitor any improvement in your child and advise when treatment should stop.

Acid reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux) is a medical term used to describe a condition where food and stomach acid back up into the esophagus. At the bottom of the esophagus is a ring of muscles called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES opens and closes to allow food to enter the stomach. After meals, the LES opens to release gas. However, more than just gas may escape. Stomach contents may flow back into the esophagus and out the mouth. What parents see is the infant spitting up, vomiting can also occur.

Acid reflux can occur during or after a feeding. It can also occur when babies cough or cry as well. Acid reflux occurs in the first three months of age in more than half of all infants. It is quite common and is generally called ’spitting up’. However, most babies do not need treatment. Acid reflux symptoms usually disappear between 12 to 18 months of age. For a very small number of babies the symptoms can be quite severe. In these cases, medical treatment is required.

Common acid reflux symptoms in infants:

• frequent coughing

• frequent hiccups

• wet burps

• bad breath

• frequent spitting up

• irritable while feeding

• frequent waking

• arching back while feeding

• constant or sudden crying

• eating small amounts of food or refusing food

Less common acid reflux symptoms in infants:

• excessive drooling

• frequent sinus or ear infections

• poor weight gain or weight loss

• frequent sore throat

• trouble swallowing

• asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, wheezing

Sometimes your doctor may make a diagnosis of acid reflux based on a parent’s description of symptoms and feeding history and a physical exam even if your baby is healthy and growing well. If your baby’s doctor suspects a more serious condition, such as GERD they may order more tests. These tests may include esophageal pH monitoring which measures the acidity in your baby’s esophagus. Another test is an Upper endoscopy. This is where a tube with a camera lens and light is inserted through the baby’s mouth and into the esophagus and stomach. The doctor uses this procedure to see if there is a narrowing or inflammation in the esophagus.

For most babies, acid reflux will disappear during the first year of life. It is extremely important to discuss the treatment options with your baby’s doctor before beginning any treatment method, especially before using any over-the-counter medicine.

Reflux is a condition babies can develop through having a weak stomach valve, that allows the milk in your babies stomach or food, to come back up the throat, burning it with stomach acid and most commonly, whatever is on the way back up is projectile vomited out.

However there is also silent reflux, which can sometimes be unnoticed or misdiagnosed, where your baby has all the above, but is not projectile vomiting. As this is the main sign of reflux some doctors may not be willing to put the rest of the symptoms down to reflux. You may notice that when your baby is feeding, he or she suddenly takes a deep swallow, like a gulp then bursts out crying, this may be your baby swallowing back down what was on the way up. If you suspect your baby has silent reflux, take your baby to the GP and explain the symptoms. If you are dismissed in anyway, make sure you stand your ground and ask for your child to be tested.

Reflux really begins to show at about 5 weeks of age, as your baby gradually begins to take more milk. Before this time, as most mums feed little and often, babies are more settled. Signs of reflux are fussing and screaming whilst feeding, baby arching its back while feeding, Gulping quickly when feeding then screaming, excessive drooling and being very unhappy whenever baby is laid flat.

If you suspect your baby suffers from this condition, see your GP immediately and be firm about having your baby tested. If your baby has mild reflux, you will most likely be recommended to change babies formula (if bottle feeding), to one of the formulas specifically designed to be thicker and easier to digest to help stop the milk coming up as easily. Omneo Comfort from Cow and Gate has a great reputation for helping with reflux and even better, in the uk it can be got on prescription. If you breast feed you may be prescribed infant gaviscon, which you will need to administer to your baby before each feed, following the instructions that come with it. In some cases the reflux is severe and your GP will sort out the appropriate medicine to help combat it.

Reflux most commonly gets better with the introduction of solid foods and by the time your baby reaches the end of the first year. Below are some other tips for helping your baby:

* When feeding your baby try to keep baby as upright as possible to help stop the milk coming back up.

* Feeding little and often and make sure baby is properly winded will help some babies.

* Once finished feeding avoid lying your baby flat on its back, keep baby up right for a good half hour.

* Prop babies cot up at one end, either with a pillow under the mattress or books under two of the legs of the cot so your baby sleeps with its head higher than its body.

Pediatric reflux or acid reflux in infants is especially hard for babies. It is a painful and very uncomfortable feeling no matter how you position your baby. Babies with acid reflux are uneasy, cranky, crying almost incessantly, and miserable. All of which makes the parents nervous and scared for their newborn. Believe it or not some acid reflux symptoms are normal and the babies may naturally outgrow their acid reflux problems.

Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter fails to prevent gastric content from going up into the esophagus. Just like adult GERD, infant GERD have almost similar symptoms and it hurts like hell in babies like it hurts adults. It is a known fact that almost half of all infants suffer infant GERD in the first three months of a baby’s life.

The common symptoms of acid reflux in infants are frequent spitting and/or vomiting, sudden prolong crying, frequent hiccups; frequent coughing, and even bad breath. When these symptoms are observed in a baby, the parents must immediately consult bring their baby to their pediatrician.

Infant GERD are often diagnosed with the symptoms reported by the parents. There are no complex diagnostic techniques for babies with GERD, except for chronic cases. One diagnostic procedure for chromic infant GERD is diagnosed by barium swallow together with X-rays to diagnose more serious problems like blockage, ulcer, abnormal growth, or such organ problems.

The treatment of acid reflux in infants depends on the age of the infant and the severity of the symptom. It is also inherent in infant GERD to go away by itself without needing any intervention. Feeding the baby with thick baby food like cereal and keeping him/her upright can alleviate the symptom. Breast feeding babies with GERD is the best to lessen the flush the acids that are in esophagus of the baby. Mother’s milk contains natural antacid so that GERD in infant is avoided.

There are simple steps that can be done by parents with babies suffering from acid reflux. If the baby is bottle feeding, a table spoon to two ounces of rice cereal maybe added to the formula in order to thicken the formula. If the formula becomes thick enough to freely flow out of the bottle, the whole in the rubber nipple can be widen of cut bigger. Burping the baby after the meal is also recommended to release the pressure inside the stomach that could aggravate infant GERD. Infants with GERD are also fed only the right amount of baby foods to lessen the gastric pressure. A pediatrician can give advised to mothers as to the right amount of food a baby can have.

Acid reflux in infants is painful and very uncomfortable for babies. They can not rest as well or eat well if they have this problem it is possible that their development maybe hindered. Therefore, proper treatment must be administered to correct the problem. Again it is not unusual for an infant to show signs of acid reflux symptoms. It is important for the parents to make careful observations and consult their Pediatrician or family doctor for assistance.

Tips to get acid reflux babies to eat are not numerous. It is one thing for an adult to experience acid reflux, and quite another for an acid reflux infant. Adults can learn what causes the problem, and deal with its symptoms. Acid reflux symptoms in infants are just another form of pain, with no understanding of what is causing them.

Brief Consideration of Acid Reflux In Babies

Acid reflux is when the band of muscle, called a sphincter, at the bottom of the esophagus fails to close, or reopens too quickly, allowing stomach juices to reflux (back-flow) into the esophagus. This lower esophageal sphincter is often called the LES, and when weak, will be forced open when it should be closed.

Every infant has a little bit of LES weakness. Their muscles, including the LES, need time to mature. That’s why we use burp cloths when burping a baby that has just finished nursing.

Acid reflux infants, however, do this a lot. Eventually, the stomach juices that flow back into the esophagus are not those that have just been diluted with a bottle of milk. The milk has been gone for a while, sometimes for hours, and the LES is allowing strong acid to flow into the esophagus.

Acid reflux is painful to the baby, and can cause extended crying and/or vomiting. This can rapidly become a vicious cycle: the baby feels pain, cries, vomits, and does not want to eat. Parents, siblings, and daycare providers are all pressed to the limits of their knowledge and patience.

Tips to Get Acid Reflux Babies to Eat

The tips given here are not from a medical professional. They are intended for educational purposes only, but they may help your get your acid reflux baby to eat and get necessary nourishment.

1. Schedule frequent, small meals for your baby. Keeping the stomach less full gives it opportunity to digest food without pressuring the LES and risking acid reflux. If acid reflux does occur, there will be little food to come up. If you have been nursing or giving a bottle every 4 hours, offer food every 2 hours for a while. Do not let the baby continue nursing to the point of being full. Small meals are better.

2. Always be sure your baby is in an upright position for nursing or drinking from a bottle. Avoid pressure against the baby’s stomach while feeding. This will give the LES maximum ability to function as it should, to keep milk in the stomach.

3. After feeding your baby, continue to hold him or her upright. This will help keep the food in the stomach where it can be digested. Hold the baby up to your shoulder, and pat to be sure the baby is burped very well. Every little air bubble is potential pressure on the weak LES, and potential acid reflux. Avoid bouncing the baby while burping. It is better to sway back and forth, comforting with the motion while patting the back.

4. Check your infant’s clothing frequently to be sure diapers and other clothing around the waist is comfortably loose. Pressure at the waist is often a contributing factor in acid reflux.

5. Never shake your baby for any reason. You are only encouraging acid reflux, and may cause your infant to connect your action with the pain.

6. NEVER allow anyone to smoke around your infant. Tobacco smoke only further weakens LES muscles, and causes acid reflux symptoms in infants to worsen.

7. Be sure that anyone responsible for your infant’s care knows that extra care and attention are needed, as are extra patience and understanding.

Words of Encouragement for You!

It is important for all concerned to remember that an acid reflux infant will usually stop having symptoms by age 1. The LES strengthens, and the baby is able to enjoy eating normally.

Some babies with acid reflux will no longer experience symptoms after 12 to 18 months, so although it’s normal to be concerned, there’s no need to be alarmed. However, there are some babies that continue to show symptoms even after a year, and cases like this needs immediate medical attention. This article will talk about some symptom of acid reflux in baby and how to check for their severity.

Mild Symptoms

A baby spitting doesn’t necessarily mean he/she has acid reflux. To check for mild symptoms of acid reflux, take note of what happened before, during, and after your baby displayed certain behaviors:

- Before Feeding – Is your baby constantly refusing to feed every time your try to feed him/her? Understandably, a baby may refuse to feed because he/she is simply full. However, if your baby is constantly refusing to feed, that’s a clear sign that he or she may be experiencing mild symptoms of acid reflux.

- During Feeding – Spitting or vomiting while feeding is very normal. But if you find your baby constantly spitting every single time you feed him/her, he or she may have acid reflux. However, your baby may spit while crying. So take note of certain behaviors and figure out when these behaviors occur. If they happen (spitting, vomiting, or coughing) while your baby is feeding or crying, then he or she may have mild symptoms of acid reflux.

- After Feeding – Take note of what happens after your baby displays peculiar behavior. If your baby is spitting or coughing during feeding and falling asleep right after feeding, then he or she may have acid reflux. The reason for this is that when a baby or adult lies down right after eating, the acid tends to travel to the esophagus. Of course, babies tend to sleep a lot, which is why the condition is so common among them. Babies that tend to do vigorous activity after feeding also has a higher risk of reflux.

Severe Symptoms

Other than spitting, vomiting, and coughing, there are other symptom of acid reflux in baby that may be much worse. To identify potentially severe symptoms, take note of:

- The Persistence of Symptoms – If your baby has been displaying symptoms for more then 18 months, then the condition might never go away unless treatment is applied.

- The Onset of Other Complications – If it has come to a point that your baby is developing slower than a healthy baby should, then this is almost a sure sign that the acid reflux is getting worse. Because of discomfort or pain, a baby with acid reflux will continue to feed poorly even after several months. This makes things even worse as the digestive system can be severely affected. Your baby may have a bloody stool and loss of blood. Generally, a baby may gain or lose weight suddenly with worse cases of acid reflux.

Two major methods are known when it comes to acid reflux treatment. Lifestyle changes and medication are then main treatments for acid reflux patients.

Changes in your lifestyle

One of the two methods used in treating an acid reflux case is the modifications that one has do make in his life. When having acid reflux, the changes will have to be permanent, because one you have had acid reflux, this condition will not go away. So treatment in acid reflux cases actually means treating the symptoms and preventing or treading the damage done by acid reflux. The first modification that you have to do when suffering from acid reflux is not to eat anything three hours before you go to bed. This change is very useful because it lets your stomach empty and the levels of acid decrease. Furthermore, if you suffer form acid reflux you should start to eat lighter meals more than four times a day. This method will also help reduce the acidity of your stomach. There are also foods and drinks that you should cut out from your eating/ drinking list if you want to treat acid reflux. Fatty or spicy foods, tomatoes, citrus fruits and mints are some of the main foods you should not eat when having acid reflux. Caffeine, carbonated drinks and alcohol must also be cut off the list. They can irritate your esophagus more, especially when suffering from acid reflux.

Other changes in your lifestyle must also be made when you are an acid reflux patient. When you are lying, your stomach contents have the tendency to come up. Therefor, elevate your bed almost six inches high and also try to stand up straight, thus reducing the pressure on your stomach.

If your baby is the one that is suffering from acid reflux, the changes in his/ her life must be done as well. Although, these changes may appear very simple to you, they will do a world of good. Thy to hold your baby in the upright position almost 30 minutes before feeding him/ her. If spitting is one of the symptoms of acid reflux that your baby has, then feeding him/ her less more frequently will help manage this acid reflux sign. Many doctors will also advice you to thicken the baby’ s formula if he/ she has acid reflux. Rice or some other formulas found in the drug stores are indicated. This will actually decrease your baby’ s amount of vomit, but this will not stop acid reflux. You should also change the position of the bed if your child is suffering from acid reflux. The head of your baby’ s bed should be elevated.

Visit it if you are looking for great information on natural cures for acid reflux, acid reflux diet, acid reflux treatment and many more.

These factors create that added pressure in the upper stomach, which moves the stomach contents to the throat.

Common signs of infants with acid reflux include dramatic loss of weight, continual vomiting, recurrent choking episodes, too much drooling, problems in swallowing, hoarseness, food aversion and chronic ear infection.

While some babies display usual signs of acid reflux, there are babies who don’t show signs such as throwing up. The reason is because they swallow up the acids instead. This could still cause irritation and, eventually, damage to the esophagus. One way of detecting silent acid reflux in infants is through the pH probe.

You can make use of certain tests to detect acid reflux in infants. One of which is the barium test wherein the infant has to swallow a little amount of barium. By this, the doctor will be able to determine the passage of food outlined by the chemical. However, this will only succeed in the moment that the child encounters acid reflux while being tested. Aside from barium, a radioactive solution could also be made to swallow before an x-ray to see the frequency of acid reflux. An endoscope views the infant’s mouth, esophagus and the tract of food in the stomach.

You as a parent can help prevent acid reflux in infants by always having him in an upright position when you feed him. The same case is true when changing the diaper, and more especially when he just ate his meal, just when he is still full. Give your baby small meals at short time intervals.

If you are a mother, you should always breastfeed him to lower the vomiting and the symptoms of his acid reflux. Breast milk has been always a great food source for infants, with so many nutrients and value to boost his health. However, you are advised to consult your doctor for some medications your baby can take if his condition does not stop, to bring relief in times of discomfort. The parents must take note of the critical administration of the drug. In case that the particular formula prescribed does not work or results to graver side effects, it is advised to shift to a new one.
