Generally known as ‘heart burn’, acid reflux disease is a condition wherein the liquid content of the stomach refluxes into the esophagus. It can be both agonizing and annoying. But if you want to know the truth, the reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals. Though, when heartburn becomes acid reflux disease or Gastro esophageal reflux disease, also referred to as GERD, it is s real problem. This is because with GERD, the acid is stronger and remains in the esophagus even longer causing more pain.

Many a times, you will experience this especially when you are upright, sitting straight, or standing and it occurs during the daytime. You body handles this reflux by the fluid flowing back down into your stomach. One tends to swallow more during the daytime as a result draining the acid back to where it belongs. Your salivary glands create saliva that also contains bicarbonate that acts to neutralize the acid your stomach has kicked up.

Though at night, you may experience a greater problem when acid reflux disease takes place that is because while sleeping, gravity does not work as well lying down, your constant swallowing stops, and the production of saliva is reduced.

For GERD, there are certain conditions that tend to make a person more prone to acid reflux disease. For instance, this can be a serious problem while you are pregnant. Elevated hormone levels of pregnancy probably cause reflux by lowering the pressure in that part of your body known as the lower esophageal sphincter. Moreover the growing baby puts more pressure on the abdomen. Both of these effects of pregnancy tend to increase the risk of GERD.

You will experience only minor symptoms if you’re acid reflux disease is a minor condition. This would include mainly heartburn, regurgitation, and nausea.

However for more complicated conditions, then one would need to watch out for the following symptoms:

Firstly the liquid that comes back into the esophagus damages the lining of the esophagus. The body in turn tries to protect itself from the acid reflux disease by ‘inflaming’ the esophagus. In many cases when trying to speed the healing process through the inflammation, the wall of the esophagus may form an ulcer. Thus an ulcer is a break in the lining of the esophagus wall. Then what happens is that there may be bleeding. In case the bleeding is very severe, patients might need a blood transfusion or even surgical treatment.

If your heartburn is severe or acute, or if it takes place very frequently, you need to see a doctor.

What can you do for yourself to alleviate the condition? You can try sleeping on a pillow at night that raises your chest up slightly so that gravity can bring the acid back down more easily. Many a times this condition regularly arises on a full stomach; hence one needs to eat earlier and eat less to keep the stomach from being too full. Cut down on the chocolate, peppermint, caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Lessen fatty foods and for sure, either cut down or quit smoking. Other foods may aggravate the conditions. Also pass up on both spicy or acid-containing foods, like citrus juices, carbonated beverages, and tomato juice.

Every year millions of adults suffer the affects of gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. But what most people don’t realize is that acid reflux in children is also a very common problem. Just like an adult if a child’s GERD is left untreated a whole multitude of problems can occur, including esophageal damage, trouble breathing, larynx damage, and an increased chance of cancer of the esophagus.

The first step to diagnosing acid reflux in a child is recognizing the symptoms of this disease. One of the first signs may be a child who has difficulty eating or swallowing, complaining of pain when doing so. They may also exhibit the signs of slow or stunted growth because of a lack of nutrition. Vomiting may also be present in a child with acid reflux as well as projectile vomiting. The thing to watch for with throwing up and children who have GERD is a vomit with a green bile look to it, or an appearance like that of coffee grounds or blood. If a child has any of these types of symptoms on a consistent basis a trip to the pediatrician is in order.

The diagnosing of acid reflux in a child begins with a description of the symptoms. Most doctors will be able to make an accurate diagnosis from this alone but depending on the severity of the symptoms and the risk of complications the doctor may order some more in depth diagnostic tests be done.

The most common test is the barium x-ray image test. By drinking barium an x-ray can be taken of the upper GI tract. This gives a detailed image of the esophagus and stomach helping a doctor to make a more accurate diagnosis. Another more invasive test is an Endoscopy in which a thin probe with a light and camera on the end is snaked down the throat and into the stomach. This gives the doctor a first hand view of any damage or underlying conditions that may be causing the acid reflux. This type of test does require general anesthesia and is usually done in a hospital.

The first recommendation your pediatrician will probably make is a change in diet for your child with acid reflux. This will not only involve avoiding the known foods that are known to set of symptoms but also eating smaller meals and avoiding any foods a good 2 to 3 hours before bed. This can be hard for a child or young adolescent because many of the foods they need to avoid are the ones they like best.

When dietary changes do not have the desired effect then your child’s doctor may suggest an over the counter medication or write a prescription for a proton pump inhibitor. These drugs work by controlling how much stomach acid the body produces.

Most children who suffer from acid reflux get it when they are babies and simply outgrow it as they travel towards adulthood. Even though this is the case it is still important to have any case of acid reflux in children properly diagnosed and treated by a pediatrician. The long term complications of not getting GERD properly treated can lead to a lifetime of discomfort, pain, and possible life threatening disease.

GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) is not actually a disease. A condition is brought on by poor eating habits. Eating the wrong food and not chewing your food properly is the main cause of acid reflux. This condition can be overcome with proper eating habits. An

acid reflux diet is your best option to get back on a healthy eating track.

If your acid reflux flares up at night then you could be eating too much at dinner or too much before bed. Eating large meals will cause the stomach to produce too much acid. Try to eat smaller and more frequent meals during the day. Including foods that are high in complex carbohydrates are good for an acid reflux diet. These foods include rice, pasta and breads. They can tie up excess stomach acid, thus making them easier on your stomach.

If you are serious about an acid reflux diet then you will want to avoid foods that are high in fat content. These foods remain in your stomach longer, which requires more stomach acid to aid in the digestion of these foods. Beer is a common contributor to acid reflux because it doubles your stomach acid in just one hour. Wine and pop also are contributors to acid reflux.

Not everyone’s acid reflux diet plan is the same. There could be foods that trigger it for you and for someone else; those same foods may not cause a problem at all. It is important to see a doctor, because they can help you work on a plan that is best suited to you. You can then experiment with different foods to determine what the main culprits are in your diet.

Regardless of what you ultimately decide on for your own acid reflux diet plan, other factors that will help you deal with this condition. Do not lie down right after you have eaten a meal. You should remain in an upright position for at least forty-five minutes after eating. When you do lie down, elevate your head about six to eight inches.

In conclusion, if you suffer from an acid reflux condition, consult a physician and start to work on changing your eating habits. You will be thankful that you have taken that first step to an acid reflux diet.

What acid reflux foodstuffs should I not eat? The majority of sufferers of acid reflux are baffled by this question. Preferring healthy foods based on selective eating between what to increase or decrease can bring long-term health advantages to acid reflux sufferers. Changes in lifestyle and diet are considered to be parts of a long-term holistic acid treatment and are integral and inseparable.

Reducing consumption of unsuitable foods and adopting new dietary habits particularly to help digestion for acid reflux sufferers could bring about a hugely positive effect on your current condition of gastro esophageal reflux disease. The food we eat is determinant in the maintenance of the delicate and natural internal equilibrium of our bodies. Certain dietary habits and nutrition have been found to contribute indirectly or directly to the worsening of GERD. These kinds of foods are:

1. Coffee and other drinks containing caffeine result in increases in acidity, so avoid large quantities of coffee. Limit your consumption each day to two cups of coffee or less if possible. When you can, divide your cup of coffee into two half cups and drink less coffee before bedtime.

2. Alcohol can also be at the same time a relaxant for the LES muscle and an irritant for the stomach, causing an increase in acidity and reflux.

3. Among the worst offenders for acid reflux symptoms are foods that are high in fat. Longer to be digested and more difficult to eliminate from your body, they push up the probability that acid refluxes into your esophagus. Exceptionally however, fish and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids are in fact strong anti-inflammatory agents.

4. If you are a chocolate addict, make dark, organic types your preference and do not exceed two or three minuscule squares two or three times in any week. Because it contains large amounts of caffeine and fat, chocolate can also boost acidity, worsening digestion, and for that reason should not be eaten.

5. Before going to sleep, make sure that you do not drink milk or consume any products based on milk containing a lot of calcium.

6. Avoid strong mint in food and also herbal tea that is mint-based. Acid reflux symptoms can be worsened by peppermint and spearmint amongst others.

7. Foods high in acid (oranges and tomatoes for example) and cruciferous vegetables (such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, brussels sprouts) trigger opening of the esophageal sphincter leading to more acid reflux.

In this case which acid reflux food is to be avoided? By making these changes in your diet and with the right motivation to change your lifestyle, you can move to vanquishing acid reflux and enhance your well-being and quality of life. No matter what your acid reflux level is, when you take the decision for better quality of life, you literally have the choice to tackle acid reflux and stop it recurring, by taking the holistic approach. The power to do that will be yours.

Acid reflux problem is a condition of the digestive system of human anatomy. It can occur to young and old, irrespective of the age. Though all of us would have sometimes experienced symptoms of reflux, but frequent episodes of acid refluxes can ruin the life of a person by giving him sleepless nights.

Let us first understand what acid reflux is all about. The acid reflux disease is also known as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). In this case, the stomach acids, often accompanied by the food can be thrown back into the food pipe causing a terrible burning sensation. This is known as heartburn, and is often followed by a severe chest pain which is similar to a heart attack. Frequent cases of acid reflux causes damage to the esophageal lining and can often lead to cancer of the esophagus.

Acid reflux is generally taken for granted for indigestion problems and often taking an antacid or an aerated drink causes immediate release of gas through burps. This may provide some relief from the reflux problem but is certainly not a cure for the disease.

Acid reflux problem occurs due to lifestyle problems and bad eating habits. Though medications may provide cure for the symptoms of the disease but the best way to avoid this problem is by natural treatments.

Treating Acid Reflux the Natural way

Natural treatment for acid reflux includes inculcating good food habits and changes in the way we lead our lives. This can be done by avoiding acidic foods from the diet, adopting healthier means of cooking and sticking to an exercise routine.

Healthy and nutritious diet plan can be great change and effective method of starting natural treatment for acid reflux problem. Healthy diet does not necessarily mean boiled meals but you can still have vegetables and meat grilled and baked using less fat and spices. Creativity and imagination is what is needed to make a simple meal healthier and tastier.

Sacrificing the ill habit of hitting the bed or lying down immediately after meals is also a cure for reflux problem. The meals should be taken at least 2-3 hours before sleeping. One can go out for slow walks after meal or indulge in playing with your pet instead of lying down. While sleeping, it is advisable to rest on your left side rather than your back. Also, raising the headboard of the bed to an inclined position also helps to control the reflux.

Though alcohol consumption and smoking do not generally cause acid reflux but they certainly aggravate the condition. Hence, these must be avoided. Also drinks containing caffeine i.e. coffee and tea must be avoided. Instead prepare yourself an herbal tea made from lavender, mint leaves and aniseed. These are known to prevent acid attacks and soothe the esophageal lining.

Herbs like ginger root, chicory root, and goldenseal are known to provide excellent relief from the symptoms of acid reflux. Apart from these, apple cider vinegar works well for some people. Fruits like pineapple, banana and apples are known to absorb the stomach acid and relax the acid reflux symptoms.

There are innumerable natural treatments available. These treatments are free from the harmful side effects of mediations. However, not all natural treatments can have the same effect on everyone. While apple cider vinegar may work for one person, it may not for the other person. So, one has to try out before deciding on the natural treatment that best suits him.

Stick to the Natural Treatment for Acid Reflux

Finding the best possible natural treatment is a long procedure and one needs to have certain amount of patience. Once you have found the natural solution to your reflux problem, stick to it. Though slow in action, the natural treatments have long term benefits to reap.

The normal tendency of us, human beings, is that the moment we reach the comfort zone, we forget the hardships that were taken to reach to the pinnacle. It may be still easier to control acid reflux problems with natural treatments but sticking to it after attaining a certain degree of comfort, is difficult. Hence, if you have seen the benefits of introducing positive changes in your food and living habits by natural means, then try to stick to the regimen.

Acid reflux, sometimes known as GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), is an irritating and sometimes hurting condition that occurs when acid and other materials in the stomach back up into your esophagus, creating a excruciating, burning feeling and sometimes causing permanent damage to the lining of the esophagus (the muscular tube that leads from your throat to the stomach).

The majority of times during acid reflux, food from the stomach stay in the lower part of the esophagus, where they can cause heartburn and nausea. Seldom, the stomach materials will reflux all the way into your mouth. But when this happens, the acid will cause a burning feeling in your throat, and you might find small, undigested pieces of food in your mouth.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

A defective lower esophageal sphincter is usually held responsible for Acid reflux. The esophageal sphincter is a strong rim of muscle that surrounds the lower end of the esophagus. When food is eaten, the sphincter contracts powerfully to drive the food into the stomach.

When the sphincter is not tough enough to force the food into the stomach, or when the sphincter does not push and simply relaxes, Acid Reflux occurs.

Other culprits connected with acid reflux consist of a hiatal hernia and a “weak” or “slow” esophagus that doesn’t contract strongly enough to move the food to the stomach in a timely manner.

What Are The Symptoms To Look For?

There are many possible symptoms that a doctor will test for, since it varies among individuals. The occurrence and intensity of symptoms can also vary from occasionally to daily, and mild to severe.

One of the major symptoms of acid reflux disease is a burning sensation in the chest that occurs after intake of food. This sensation may last a few hours and become worse if one lies down after eating. The burning can also travel up into the throat area, and there might be a sour taste in the mouth. Occasionally, an individual will develop a cough or become hoarse as a consequence of this burning in the throat and chest.

If no treatment is sought to the point of damage to the larynx, respiratory problems may develop, scar tissue might build up in the esophagus causing swallowing to be difficult and medical treatment will be essential to prevent more damage.

How Is Acid Reflux Treated?

Medications are available to help ease the discomfort of acid reflux disease. However, for greatest benefit, doctors also suggest lifestyle changes. They include:

Weight Loss

Although the reasons are not clearly understood, overweight group tend to be more at risk for acid reflux disease as compared to people with normal weight. Research shows that losing just 10% of your body weight can ease the symptoms of acid reflux.

Abstention From Smoking And Drinking

Nicotine is thought to weaken the esophageal sphincter, as with Alcohol. Production of excessive acid might also be caused by the two.

Staying Upright For At Least 45 Minutes After A Meal

Straight away after eating, acid fills your stomach as it works to digest the foods you have consumed. Lying down during this time is most likely to cause the acid to flow into your esophagus. Gravity will help keep the acid in the stomach if you sit or stand upright.

Eat Several Small Meals A Day Instead Of Three Big Ones

More acid is needed if more food is consumed to digest it. Having numerous small meals is much easier on your digestive system, thus reducing the chance of acid reflux disease occurring.

Avoid Clothing That Is Tight Around The Waist

Tight clothing will force food and acid up against the esophageal sphincter. A damaged sphincter will allow the contents to flow back into the esophagus with unlikable results.

Avoidance Of Fast Foods

Nearly all fast foods are high in fat. More acid is produced due to Fatty foods, which can result in increased symptoms of acid reflux disease.

In addition, over-the-counter medications are available to ease symptoms. Histamine Receptor Antagonists, like Pepcid and Zantac, work by decreasing the amount of acid in the stomach. Mylanta and Tagamet, on the other hand, work to neutralize acid.

Finally, if the symptoms persist, doctors may recommend proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium and Prevacid. They prevent the discharge of acid into the stomach and intestines. Lastly, Reglan, a promotility agent, may be used to force the esophagus to empty more quickly and to speed digestion.

Acid reflux disease or Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease that happens when stomach contents pass through the overrelaxed lower esophageal sphincter and irritate the esophageal lining. This kind of disease, which left untreated, can lead to some forms of cancer. So, since acid reflux is like other diseases which can be triggered by eating certain foods, what are the safe foods for acid reflux and which should be avoided?

Basically, one should avoid foods that are highly acidic and those high in fat because they are hard to be digested, causing the digestive system to work harder and produce too much acids.

The food you should avoid include chocolates, caffeine, fatty food, citrus, high fat meat, cream, butter and oil, desserts and baked goods high in fat, tomato-based products, spices like onion and chili, dairy products like sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cottage cheese, junk food and alcohol.

On the other hand, you should be eating steamed vegetables, low fat fat meat, and light baked goods low in fat. Apples and food high in complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread and pasta can also be good.

Other things you can do include eating in small amounts, sitting in upright position and chewing your food well to avoid getting your digestive system to worked up digesting what you ate. You should have a food diary with you because it helps to let you know the ones which had caused your acid reflux in case you suffered from one.

So, if you want to know more acid reflux foods to avoid, just ask a doctor, a nutritionist or a dietitian.

And for a natural treatment for acid reflux, just visit my blog where I give a review on a book that helped thousands cure their condition naturally.

The symptoms of acid reflux disease are as follows: heartburn, which is characterized by chest pain; inflammation in the mucosa; difficulty in swallowing; cough and hoarseness. These symptoms are felt by the infected person after eating a fatty meal or drinking liquor, when bending, and worse when constantly smoking.

Acid reflux disease is primarily caused by the malfunction of the esophageal sphincter. If there is insufficient supply of the stomach acid, the valve in the stomach responsible for churning up foods to the intestine does not open up. Some of the factors that can trigger acid reflux disease are hiatus hernia, zollinger-elison syndrome, hypercalcemia, scleroderma and systemic sclerosis.

According to paradoxical beliefs, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee can lead to gastro esophageal reflux. But recent studies show that although individuals already infected by this disease can be aggravated by alcohol, tea and coffee, these elements do not cause the disease. Compared to smoking which amplifies the risks of getting the disease, alcohol, tea and coffee had the least impact. But this doesn’t mean that GERD infected people are free to take the beverages stated above. Doctors still suggest avoiding drinking of alcohol in order to shun further aggravation.

Smoking is the chief culprit that causes acid reflux disease. Regular smokers for twenty years are 70% susceptible to acid reflux disease compared to non-smokers. And symptoms of those who already developed the GERD are worsened day by day due to smoking.

The highlight of the research is that great amounts of salts are found to be equivalent to regular smoking in terms of the risk of developing GERD. It is not a common knowledge that table salts can cause acid reflux disease but researchers found out in their studies that people who are constantly using extra salt are 70% at risk to have gastro esophageal reflux disease. Gastroenterologists of New York University Medical Center attested this fact.

Gastro esophageal reflux disease can be diagnosed even by the infected person himself through the appearance of the symptoms. In the occurrence of these symptoms, it is advised to undergo the tests conducted by medical experts to clear doubts of having the disease or to carry out possible treatments.

To treat this kind of disorder, there are varieties of ways possible. It can be cured by prescribed drugs such as antacids, by natural way such as change of diet system, elevation of the head when lying down, or to the utmost is surgery. And of course, it will be best to stop or avoid smoking and drinking alcohol especially to people who are vulnerable to acid reflux disease.

Gastro esophageal reflux disease causes a lot of discomfort that it can ruin even your lifestyle. To avoid its bad effects, precautionary measures should be considered. The cliché quote that prevention is better than cure applies always.

Because acid reflux disease (GERD – Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) affects more than 60 million people in the United States it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms that it can cause. The symptoms of acid reflux disease are varied and can be different among its million of sufferers. Some people have regular symptoms through out the day while others may only get them after they eat certain foods. No matter the cause a visit to the doctor at the first signs of symptoms is the best course of action to help prevent this condition from becoming more serious.

Acid reflux is a condition that can happen to anyone at any age including babies, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. It can also happen at anytime with heartburn being one of the first symptoms you will notice. When stomach acid flows back up the esophagus you get heartburn or acid reflux. For most people this happens after eating certain types of food, which can vary from person to person.

The main symptom of acid reflux is a burning sensation in the chest and throat that begins soon after eating. Of course the best way to avoid this is to avoid those foods that cause the symptoms. This can be hard for some people because it might be hard to make that choice of eliminating their favorite foods from their diet, but if it means gaining relief from the pain and discomfort of this condition then it might be a small price to pay.

It is important to consider these dietary lifestyle changes because left untreated acid reflux disease can lead to more serious complications. The acid from your stomach will begin to damage and destroy the lining of your esophagus if the symptoms of GERD are ignored. This will also cause other problems such as a chronic cough, choking, nausea, and vomiting, particularly after meals. You will also begin to suffer from hoarseness caused by damaged vocal cords.

The most severe of all acid reflux disease symptoms is Barrett\’s esophagus, in which the lower lining of the esophagus is damaged by repeated exposure to stomach acid. This abnormal change in the cellular structure of the esophagus is a pre-malignant condition that is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer of the esophagus.

Most doctors are able to make a diagnosis of acid reflux disease by simply finding out what the effecting symptoms are. Once diagnosed it becomes important to make dietary changes that will mitigate the affects of this disease. If changes in diet do not quell the symptoms then it will become necessary to treat the acid reflux with either over the counter or prescription medications. Your doctor can help you find what will best work for you.

Further reading: Acid Reflux Symptoms.

Read more about what foods to avoid if you have acid reflux: Acid Reflux Diet.

More about acid reflux symptoms: What does acid reflux feel like?.
